On our second day in Bukit Lawang we decided to go on a "trek"-- a glorified day-hike along a network of interconnecting, well-trodden trails. All the worst practices of conservation were on display: orangutans being fed, orangutans using aggression to extort food from so-called guides, tourists crowding around orangutans for photos.

And yet, there we were. Hmmm.
