Monday
LOCATION: Bukit Lawang, Indonesia
APPEARING: Is an ape a people?
Bukit Lawang is an odd place, at once charming, and ominous. It is here that at least one flood, a decade ago, took many lives, and almost destroyed a livelihood. It's here that young, local men croon against a guitar, and woo foreign tourists with a mastered degree of skill. It's here that human and ape intersect in an uncomfortable way-- each dependent on the other, and not always in a healthy way.

It is here that one can look deeply into his ancestral past, see his reflection, and, in a start, see how we've gotten to where we are. Unquieting, if we are to be honest with ourselves.
