Though Munich is world class when it comes to climbing in gyms-- the largest bouldering-only gym in the world as well as the largest artificial route climbing gym in the world-- it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to climbing on real rock. But there's Buchenhain, about 1 hour upriver by bike from downtown Munich.
It may not look like much, and it's strange conglomerate, and it's been polished to glass in some places-- it is at least an important historical footnote in German climbing. For nearly 100 years, people have clung to the rock here at the Buchenhain Klettergarten ('climbing garden'). They still do.
So for her birthday, we paid a visit.
