Saturday
LOCATION: Borobudor | Mt. Merapi, Indo
APPEARING: Steffi | Maia
We awoke at around 3 am to see the sunrise over Borobudor, and we were greeted by a quick rain and the confusion of riding a motorbike through the backstreets of a village. But find the lookout we did, in time to see the sun illuminate temple spires poking out from the jungle, and smoke belching from deep within the earth, spewing from the top of an active volcano.

Afterwards, it was to the temple itself, as the sun peaked out from behind the mountains. Then a quick nap, and the local pick-me-up soup.

The day ended in misadventure as we pushed our little 125cc motorbike to its limits climbing Mt. Merapi, then off-road down through the old pyroclastic flows, then to a flat tire. There a man took our bike away for an hour and we drank coffee with the young owner of a small mining interest (last image). The mountain was cloaked in rainclouds, and we were told that because of Merapi's recent activity it wasn't safe to explore any further as long as its (potentially rock-launching) crater wasn't visible.
